Without the Gelcoat your boat would look unfinished and it would be unprotected. The Gelcoat is a layer of resin that protects the hull by sealing the fibreglass underneath. It will protect it from the elements including water, moisture and the sun's ultraviolet rays. The Gelcoat also gives the boat its color and provides a glossy finish, much like paint on a car. Gelcoat is extremely hard and can protect against stains and damage such as small shocks which would otherwise penetrate the fibreglass.
